Moving to New York for the first time? Here are 7 tips to help you stay on budget.
1. Be prepared to sacrifice. In order to stay within your budget, you are going to find that of the three main selling points to an apartment; rent, location, size – most places in New York only have one feature. So you should base your search on the feature that you value the most. 2. Use Craigslist, but be careful. Although Craigslist is convenient, be aware that people often lie about location. People that post apartments often take the liberty of extending the boundaries of safe, trendy neighborhoods several subways stops and miles from their actual limits. So if you’re seriously interested in an apartment you found on Craigslist, make sure you further investigate its surroundings. 3. Broker Fees vs. no-fees. If possible, avoid using a broker at all costs. Although they are very helpful in your search, most brokers charge between 10-15% of your yearly rent--- yikes! 4. Prepare to pay. The average rent prices in New York are pretty shocking. On top of that, some people don’t realize the amount you have to pay up front. The basic formula is: first month rent + last month rent + deposit = payment upfront (may also include credit check fee).
